SEMINAR ON FIGHT AGAINST PHARMACEUTICAL CRIME AND PRODUCTS THAT AFFECT PUBLIC HEALTH • Cláudia Mabone, from Baipa, was one of the speakers


During 3rd and 4th of May, a seminar on fight against pharmaceutical crime and products that affect public health, was held in Maputo. It was organized by Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) and SERNIC (National Service of Criminal Investigation).
The seminar had as target group governmental institutions that have counterfeit in their roll of activities or are interested in the matter. Thus, the attendees were comprised of the representative of SERNIC, Attorney General of the Republic, Ministry of Health, General Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE), Customs of Mozambique, Medicines Center, pharmaceutical companies and trademarks representative as BAIPA, Spoor & Fisher, MSD, Adams & Adams. It was also present the representative of NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) of Nigeria.
The main objective of the seminar was to empower the participants, specially SERNIC Agents and other governmental institutions with knowledge on counterfeiting of several products, reason for which the seminar was transformed in a training, with practical questions related to products evaluation, identification of counterfeits products (differences between the originals and fakes), counterfeiting investigation and subsequent steps which lead to the destruction of the products, among other aspects.

Baipa presentation
Cláudia Mabone made her presentation on the second day of the event. In a very exhaustive intervention that captivated the audience, she spoke of Baipa's experience in combating counterfeiting and in collaboration with the authorities (INAE), highlighting the action that last year resulted in the seizure and destruction of counterfeited Tonners of HP trademark. However, the epicenter of her speech was related to the products of the PUMA trade mark, with emphasis on the difference between original and counterfeit products and how to easily identify the latter. She also addressed the legal treatment of counterfeiting within the scope of the Industrial Property Code, namely its typification and punishment.
